About the Jack Miller Center

The Jack Miller Center (JMC) is a Philadelphia-based educational nonprofit committed to advancing civic education grounded in America’s founding principles and history. We believe such an education affirms the dignity of all people as the basis for human equality, liberty, and self-government and is the linchpin for citizenship and civic life in America.

To achieve this, our nation’s educators must be well versed in the core texts, ideas, and history we hold in common as Americans. By building a vast network of dedicated scholars, we can transform civics at all levels. And by drawing on the best traditions of liberal education, we can equip educators and students with the basis to navigate the many challenges facing modern education.

Our project began in 2004 when Chicago philanthropist Jack Miller convened 50 leading professors and higher education experts to discuss the dire state of civics in America’s universities and what could be done about it. Since then, we have grown into a nationwide coalition of scholars, K-12 teachers, philanthropists, and civic leaders who are passionate about advancing civic education in America.

Our work centers on four priorities:

  • University Faculty Pipeline: Grow and empower a national network of scholars and academic leaders dedicated to education in America’s founding principles and history.
  • K-12 Teacher Education: Create nationwide access to innovative content-based training and graduate education for K-12 civics and history teachers, led by experienced scholars.
  • Community College Educators: Build advanced professional development programs for community college faculty, focused on course design and the use of primary sources.
  • A Nationwide Movement for Civic Literacy: Engage leaders, educators, and funders in growing the movement through the National Summit on Civic Education, partnerships with civics organizations, the Civics Magazine, the JMC National Civics Council, and more.

Position overview

The Coalitions Associate will support the planning, organizing, and execution of the Jack Miller Center’s National Summit on Civic Education. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with the coalitions and events teams to carry out a major annual event that serves to catalyze civic education efforts across the country.
