The Founding Civics Initiative is the Jack Miller Center’s project to support K-12 civics educators through high-quality professional development programs and classroom resources. This growing initiative at JMC emphasizes the importance of teaching founding documents to middle and high school students, deepens K-12 teachers’ understanding of the content they teach, and builds a community of educators committed to meaningful civics education for the next generation.

Position overview

The Teacher Programs Manager will support the expansion of Jack Miller Center programming for K-12 educators under the direction of the Director of the Founding Civics Initiative. The Manager will be responsible for working with JMC partner professors to develop, implement, and execute programs for teachers that deepen their understanding of America’s founding principles and help them apply their learning to their curriculum. In addition, the Manager will contribute to the development of JMC curricular materials and resources for teachers available on JMC’s website.

Office Location: The Jack Miller Center’s office is located in Bala Cynwyd, PA, but this is a remote position with an expectation of travel.

Salary: $75,000 – $85,000

Reports to: Director of the Founding Civics Initiative 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Execute JMC professional development programs for K-12 educators independently and in partnership with JMC partner professors; programs feature discussion of primary source texts from the American political tradition as well as application workshops focused on curriculum development and teaching strategies, particularly for history and civics courses grades 6-12.
  2. Attend conferences and events on behalf of JMC.
  3. Create new models of professional development programming for educators. 
  4. Build ongoing collaborative relationships with teacher participants and JMC faculty partners.
  5. Build relationships with educators, school administrators, and non-profit professionals to promote JMC programming.
  6. Develop curricular materials and resources for teachers available on JMC’s website and educator newsletter.

Skills and Requirements

  1. Strong commitment to the mission of the Jack Miller Center
  2. Ability to travel multiple days per month as needed and up to 20 days total during the summer
  3. At least 5 years of experience teaching in a middle or high school classroom, preferably with a focus on civics, government, and/or American history
  4. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  5. Strong interpersonal skills with an enthusiasm for network-building
  6. Self-motivated; ability to work independently essential
  7. Detail-oriented, strong time-management skills, and ability to prioritize work
  8. Collaborative team player with the ability to successfully engage with colleagues across the organization
  9. Ability to interact professionally with professors, donors, and other individuals involved in our efforts
  10. Flexibility and adaptability with job requirements and workflow
  11. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
