Fourteenth Amendment: Origins and Interpretations
The Jack Miller Center is partnering with Founding Forward on a three-day seminar for middle and high school teachers that explores the origins, interpretations, and enduring impact of the 14th Amendment.
The seminar aims to equip educators with knowledge, resources, and practical tools to engage students in meaningful discussions about constitutional history. Through scholar presentations and group discussions, it will address the 14th Amendment’s drafting, ratification, and core principles, while highlighting the Amendment’s role in reshaping American law and society. Participants will also explore how the Amendment has been interpreted over time, specifically through landmark Supreme Court cases like Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education, debating its application to issues like segregation, marriage equality, and civil rights.
The program will conclude with a guided tour of the Union League of Philadelphia’s historic collection, featuring Civil War-era artifacts and documents related to the Reconstruction period.
Sessions will be held at the Union League Liberty Hill in Lafayette Hill, PA. This seminar is open to social studies teachers across the country. Lodging and most meals will be provided. In addition, participants will receive a $150 stipend for completion of the program.
