The Jack Miller Center is a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to promoting education in America’s founding principles and history, an education vital to thoughtful and engaged citizenship. We work to advance the teaching and study of America’s history, its political and economic institutions and the central principles, ideas and issues arising from the American and Western traditions, all of which continue to animate our national life. We support professors and educators through programs, resources, fellowships and more to help ​them teach our nation’s students.

 

Position Overview:

The Development Associate is an integral member of the Jack Miller Center’s development team, responsible for supporting all aspects of the organization’s development efforts. Reporting to the major gifts officer and director of development, the Development Associate will primarily focus on developing and implementing a foundation grant fundraising strategy to support the JMC’s initiatives and programs. Specific responsibilities include prospect research and analysis; grant writing and reporting; contributing to the creation and management of annual submission schedules; coordination with program, finance and development staff for funding requests and reports; and support the Communications Manager for communication with funders as well as in-network communications.

Reports to: Major Gifts Officer and Director of Development

Work Location: Bala Cynwyd, PA, a suburb just outside of Philadelphia (Remote position will not be considered.)

 

Job Duties:

Foundation Grant Fundraising Strategy

  1. Work closely with all areas of JMC to learn about current projects and grasp implications for donor base
  2. Work closely with development staff to better understand donor motivation and the best approach for communications
  3. Write letters of inquiry, major grants proposals, project descriptions, and reports
  4. Manage deadlines and schedules for proposals and reports
  5. In cooperation with program, operations and development teams, create project budgets for requests and reports

Prospect Research

  1. Conduct ongoing research on foundation and individual prospects
  2. Prepare development staff for donor and prospect meetings
  3. Make recommendations on strategic cultivation steps
  4. Maintain up-to-date information in the database

Communications

  1. Draft general letters: renewal letters, introductory letters, thank-you letters, follow-up letters, etc.
  2. Ensure all donors are thanked promptly for gifts
  3. Contribute to newsletters, annual report and other donor communications

 

Skills/Requirements:

  1. Commitment to the mission of the Jack Miller Center
  2. Bachelor’s degree
  3. One-year experience with grant writing or in a writing-intensive position strongly preferred; experience with higher education organizations and non-profit fundraising a plus
  4. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; ability to accurately copyedit
  5. Self-motivated; ability to work independently and as part of a team
  6. Detail-oriented, strong time-management skills and ability to prioritize work
  7. Collaborative team-player with the ability to successfully engage with colleagues across the organization
  8. Ability to interact professionally with donors, professors and other individuals involved in our efforts
  9. Flexibility and adaptability to changing work environments
  10. Working knowledge of applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat
  11. Experience with contact management systems a plus, particularly Salesforce
