Essie Jones is a math teacher at the STEM Academy at Alexandria City High School in Alexandria, Virginia. A veteran educator of 33 years, she holds a Master of Education in mathematics from Wesleyan College, a B.S. in mathematics from Chicago State University, and endorsements in gifted education and English language learners. Specializing in project-based learning, Essie integrates mathematics with science, technology, English, CTAE, and the arts. A DonorsChoose and Amazon Future Engineer Ambassador, she is dedicated to creating opportunities and elevating voices for students through mentorship in college admissions and scholarships. A community advocate, she volunteers with the Fight Like Deuce Foundation, Project Impact 180, and Move2Learn. Her current project, “The 250 Years of Principles,” impacts 5,000 students through interdisciplinary study.
Project Description: Students will develop an understanding of the history, rhetoric, visual culture, and modern preservation attempts of the Declaration through in-class discussion and field trips to the National Archives and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, in preparation for a public assembly titled “Echoes of Independence,” highlighting student research and art.
