Professional Development at Bethel University: Diving into the Declaration of Independence

Bethel University, with the support of the Jack Miller Center, is hosting a three-day civics symposium for Minnesota social studies teachers.

Minnesota

What did Jefferson mean when he said that “All men are created equal”? What are “Unalienable rights,” and why did Jefferson say they were “Endowed by our Creator”? And what is a “Self-evident truth”? In this symposium, participants will dive into these questions by reading, analyzing, and discussing some short excerpts of the sources that Jefferson read and digested as he wrote the Declaration of Independence: John Locke, Blackstone, Aristotle, and Lord Kames.

Sessions will be led by Bethel University professor Lynn Uzzell and Benedictine College professor Kevin Burns.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily. Participants will receive 15 hours of professional development credit and a $300 stipend for full completion of the program.
