Teacher Symposium at Michigan State: Great Debates in American Politics
The Jack Miller Center is partnering with the James Madison College at Michigan State University to offer this three-day program in East Lansing for middle and high school social studies teachers.
This symposium will look at key political debates from various eras in American history, including the Founding Era, the Antebellum and Civil War Eras, and the twentieth century. Participants will read, discuss, and analyze primary sources from these eras, including the Federalist Papers and Anti-Federalist Papers, the Lincoln – Douglas Debates, and Herbert Hoover’s and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speeches on the New Deal.
Scholar sessions will be led by Professors Jordan Cash and Brianne Wolf of Michigan State University. JMC Teacher Programs Manager Emilee McHorney will lead an application session on strategies for incorporating the primary sources discussed into teachers’ own classrooms and lesson plans.
Participants will receive a $300 stipend for completion of the program.
