Workshop in Milwaukee: Jefferson and the Origins of the Declaration

The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee is hosting a two-and-a-half-day workshop for Wisconsin social studies teachers, in partnership with the Jack Miller Center and the Office of Civic Engagement for the Universities of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin

This workshop invites K-12 social studies educators to explore the ideas, debates, and historical context behind the Declaration of Independence through close analysis of primary sources. Participants will examine drafts of the Declaration written by Thomas Jefferson and edited by members of the drafting committee, including John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, while investigating the political and intellectual influences that shaped the document and its contributors.

The workshop will include scholar-led discussions centered around the Declaration and related primary texts, and a classroom application component focused on strategies for using the sources in teachers’ own classrooms.

Participants will receive a $450 stipend for completion of the program.
