Philadelphia, PA – The Jack Miller Center formally announced the addition of two new members to its Board of Directors: Tamara Mann Tweel and Lucas Morel. Celebrating its twentieth year of operations, the JMC is a Philadelphia-based educational nonprofit committed to solving the national crisis of uninformed citizenship by teaching America’s founding principles and history. “Our Board of Directors plays a vital role in advancing our mission to revitalize civic education,” said JMC Chairman Michael Weiser. “As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, their engaged citizenship is more important than ever. Tamara Mann Tweel brings a wealth of experience in civic education and public scholarship. With a background that bridges academia and community engagement, she has worked extensively to promote civic responsibility through educational initiatives and public service. Tweel’s leadership in philanthropy and her commitment to cultivating informed citizenship align closely with the mission of the Jack Miller Center. She is a Senior Program Director at The Teagle Foundation, focused on efforts to strengthen the civic dimension of undergraduate education. Previously, she served as the Founder and Director of Civic Spirit and the Associate Director of the Freedom and Citizenship Program at Columbia University.

Aside from her service on the Jack Miller Center’s Board of Directors, she serves on the Advisory Council of the Princeton University Office of Religious Life and on the Board of Directors of PACE: Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement. She holds a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University, an M.A. in theology from the Harvard Divinity School, and a B.A. in political philosophy and art history from Duke University.

“As a young scholar, I was introduced to the Jack Miller Center through their post-doctoral program. It inspired me to be a better scholar and teacher of American history,” said Tweel. “It is a great privilege, more than a decade later, to help the Center advance its important mission.”

Lucas Morel, a nationally recognized scholar of American political thought, currently serves as the John K. Boardman, Jr. Professor of Politics at Washington and Lee University. A leading expert on Abraham Lincoln and the political philosophy of the American founding, Morel’s academic contributions and dedication to civic education make him a vital addition to the Center’s leadership.  He currently serves on the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, which will plan activities to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America.

Professor Morel has taught at Washington and Lee University since July 1999. He also teaches in the summer Master’s Program in American History and Government at Ashland University in Ohio; summer programs for the Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy; and high school teacher workshops sponsored by the Ashbrook Center, the Gilder-Lehrman Institute, the Jack Miller Center, the Bill of Rights Institute, and the Liberty Fund.

“I’m excited to join an organization whose mission is to promote the principles of the American founding,” said Morel. The Jack Miller Center has played a key role in my efforts to teach about great Americans like Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, whose devotion to the ideals and institutions of American self-government helped Americans narrow the gap between profession and practice. I hope to contribute to the Center’s expanding efforts to bring greater attention to the political ideals, institutions, and habits necessary for perpetuating our free way of life.”

“It is an honor to welcome Tamara and Lucas to our Board of Directors,” said JMC President Hans Zeiger. “They have both already contributed so much to the renaissance of civic education this country is witnessing, and I am excited to put their wisdom into action here at JMC.”

The Jack Miller Center is a nationwide network of scholars, educators, and other civics professionals dedicated to teaching America’s founding principles and history. It plays a leading role at both a K-12 level and on college and university campuses. To learn more about the JMC, visit www.jackmillercenter.org.
