Verlan Lewis, Ph.D.
Senior Fellow for Constitutional Studies
Verlan Lewis serves as the Jack Miller Center’s Senior Fellow for Constitutional Studies. In this role, Lewis researches, teaches, and writes about America’s founding principles and history, including constitutional pluralism. He supports our Constitution Day Initiative and encourages public discussion of the Constitution by JMC scholars.
Lewis is also the Stirling Professor of Constitutional Studies and an associate professor of political science at Utah Valley University, where he teaches courses on American politics and directs programs for the UVU Center for Constitutional Studies. His writing has appeared in a variety of publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Hill, Political Science Quarterly, Party Politics, Studies in American Political Development, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Perspectives on Political Science, and The Political Science Reviewer, among others. His first book, Ideas of Power, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2019. His second book, The Myth of Left and Right, was published by Oxford University Press in 2023.
Lewis earned his Ph.D. in Government from the University of Virginia, an M.Phil. in Political Thought and Intellectual History from Cambridge University, and a B.A. in Political Science and American Studies from Brigham Young University. He has held visiting fellowships at Stanford University and Harvard University.
