Founding Civics Summer Book Club: Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and a Post-Slavery America

Join JMC for a summer reading group on Booker T. Washington’s and W.E.B. DuBois’ views on improving the lives and conditions of Black Americans in post-Civil War society.

Virtual Event

This club of up to ten teachers will analyze the two leading African American voices in the decades following the end of slavery. Though they had tremendous influence, they differed significantly in their views on how African Americans should pursue education, civil rights, and political rights. These two thinkers represent perspectives that are still worth knowing and understanding today.

The book club discussions will be facilitated by JMC Senior Fellow for K-12 Civic Education Andrew Carico.

This club will meet virtually on Tuesday and Thursday from 7 – 8 pm ET during the weeks of July 13th and 20th. Teachers will receive a $100 Amazon gift card for participation in the Club.

Spots in this book club will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
