Teacher Symposium at Carthage College: Outsiders’ Views of Democracy and Republicanism
Carthage College, in partnership with the Jack Miller Center, is hosting a two-day symposium in Kenosha, WI for social studies teachers.
This symposium will examine primary sources reflecting views of democracy and republicanism from an outside perspective. Session topics will include Polybius’ Greek view of Rome, Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, and socialist, liberal, and conservative views of the American republic.
Content sessions will be led by Drs. Eric Pullin, Ben DeSmidt, and Paul Ulrich. JMC Teacher Programs Manager Emilee McHorney will lead a classroom application session on incorporating primary sources into teachers’ own lessons and connecting content from the symposium to middle and high school classrooms.
Participants will receive a $200 stipend for completing the program.
