National Council for the Social Studies Conference
The Jack Miller Center’s Founding Civics team will be attending this year’s NCSS conference.
2024 Teaching Excellence Award winner Jane Highley will join JMC’s own Emilee McHorney for the following poster presentation on Friday, December 5 at 1:50 pm:
Democracy Through Documents: Teaching Founding Principles Through Primary Sources
In this poster session, educators will explore how a shared American identity strengthens democracy by focusing on common ideals. Through primary source analysis of foundational texts over time, participants will examine how documents and principles can be used to promote unity in a divided society. Educators will leave with a primary source analysis handout with speech excerpts and guiding questions, activity ideas, and practical strategies for fostering civic unity in the classroom.
